Signs of Alternator Failure
One of the big advantages of modern alternators is that they often give advanced warning of impending failure. There are many potential signs of problems, all of which you should treat seriously. We’ve listed the most common indicators below; if you suspect a problem with your alternator, don’t delay. Call the team at Simcoe Starter and Alternators right away—before you find yourself stranded.
Dead Battery
Not all dead batteries are caused by malfunctioning alternators, but it does happen often enough. If you decided to have your battery replaced have the technician check over your alternator too; if it turns out the problem is with the alternator you can prevent a more serious problem down the road.
Engine Won’t Start or Stalls
Alternators do a number of things, one of which is providing power to the spark plugs. A failing alternator may not provide adequate power to the spark plugs, which can result in an absence of combustion. After a while, this problem can become so severe that the engine will not start.
Headlight Flickering
If your vehicle’s headlights are flickering, it could be a sign of a malfunctioning alternator. The alternator gives headlights and indicators power; flickering often means that there is a problem.
Have You Seen the Light?
…the little light on the dashboard, that is; most vehicles are equipped with an indicator light somewhere in the dashboard. Usually marked “GEN” or “ALT”, indicators don’t tell you exactly what the problem is, except that there is a problem. If you see lights like this on your dashboard or display, don’t ignore them. Bring your vehicle in for an inspection today or give Simcoe Starter and Alternators a call to learn more .
Engine Noise
This one is a little bit more difficult to diagnose as engine noises can occur for a variety of reasons, but alternator failure is one of the more common reasons, and is often accompanied by ball bearings falling into the engine.
